Kim Jong-in (born January 14, 1994), better known as Kai, is a South Korean singer, model, actor and dancer. He is a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy group Exo and its sub unit Exo-K. Apart from his group's activities, Kai has also starred in various television dramas such as Choco Bank (2016), Andante (2017), and Spring Has Come (2018).

Early life

Kai was born on January 14, 1994,[1] in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. He began dancing when he was eight years old. He originally did jazz dance, but after watching The Nutcracker he began to train in ballet while in the third grade.[2] He stated that his parents initially wanted him to learn Taekwondo and the piano.

After participating in the SM Youth Best Contest with the encouragement of his father, he won and signed with the company in 2007 at thirteen years old. He began training in hip hop after joining SM Entertainment.[3]

Career

2011–15: Career beginnings

Kai was the first Exo member to be formally introduced to the public on December 23, 2011.[4] He made his first televised performance alongside fellow EXO members Luhan, Chen and Tao as well as other SM Entertainment artists at the year-end music program SBS Gayo Daejeon on December 29, 2011.[5]

In October 2012, Kai participated in the promotional group Younique Unit alongside labelmates Eunhyuk, Henry, Hyoyeon, Taemin and Luhan. The group released a single titled 'Maxstep' as part of the collaboration between SM Entertainment and Hyundai.[6] Later in December 2012, he joined the dance group SM The Performance, along with fellow member Lay, TVXQ's Yunho, Super Junior's Eunhyuk and Donghae, Shinee's Minho and Taemin.[7] The group first made its appearance at the event SBS Gayo Daejeon on December 29, and performed their single 'Spectrum'. The single was officially released the next day.[8]

In August 2014, Kai was featured in the song 'Pretty Boy' from Shinee member Taemin's debut album.[9]

2016–present: Acting career

In January 2016, he made his official acting debut as the male lead in the web drama Choco Bank,[10][11] which achieved record-breaking viewership.[12] In December 2016, he starred in two episodes of the special web drama First Seven Kisses which was produced by Lotte Duty Free.[13]

In January 2017, Kai was announced to be starring as the male lead in the KBS teen drama Andante, playing a high school student.[14][15] In February 2017, he was cast in the Japanese drama Spring Has Come, based on the Japanese novel of the same name.[16] The drama marks the first time a non-Japanese actor taking a lead role on a drama produced by the broadcasting station WOWOW.[17]

In December 2017, Kai was chosen as the cover model for December's issue of The Big Issue, which is a magazine known for helping the homeless. The magazine sold out 20,000 copies within the first two days, and until now, 80,000 copies have been sold, which records the highest number of copies sold since the magazine's start in July 2010.[18]

In 2018, Kai was cast in KBS' melodrama Miracle That We Met.[19]

Yoon Shi-yoon (Hangul: 윤시윤; born Yoon Dong-gu on September 26, 1986)[1] is a South Korean actor and television personality. He is best known for his leading roles in King of Baking, Kim Takgu (2010), My Cute Guys (2013), Hit the Top (2017), Grand Prince (2018) and Your Honor (2018). In 2016, he became a member of the variety show 2 Days & 1 Night.

Early life[edit]

Yoon was born Yoon Dong-gu, a name he used until an official change of name upon his entry into college, in a small town in Suncheon. He is the only child of his family, and was raised by his grandparents. At the time, while peers of his age went to kindergarten and learned English, Yoon went to seodang, a traditional school that taught Confucianism, and learned to read Hanja (Chinese characters).[1] Yoon's unique childhood was then unveiled through his song 'Grandpa's Bicycle' for Barefooted Friends.

Career[edit]

2009–2010: Rising popularity and breakthrough[edit]

Yoon debuted in the daily sitcom High Kick Through the Roof and rose to fame for his role as a semi-rebellious teenager.[2] He was nominated for Best New Actor in TV at the Baeksang Arts Awards, and won MBC's Best Couple award with his co-star Shin Se-kyung.

The following year, Yoon was cast as the main character in the slice-of-life television series King of Baking, Kim Takgu. The drama's writer, Kang Eun-kyung, saw Yoon in High Kick Through the Roof and picked him for the role.[3] The series was one of the most watched shows in South Korea in 2010 with a final episode viewership rating of 50.8%; and Yoon became a household name in Korea.[4][5][6][7] Due to the drama's popularity, Yoon and co-star Lee Young-ah were named promotional ambassadors for North Chungcheong Province.[8]

The same year, Yoon had his first big screen debut with a leading role in the horror movie Death Bell 2: Bloody Camp.[9][10]

2011–2014: Leading roles[edit]

In 2011, Yoon was cast over Kim Jaewon, who suffered from multiple injuries, in the romantic-comedy Me Too, Flower!. He played a millionaire masquerading as a parking attendant and entering into relationship with an abrasive female police officer (Lee Ji-ah).[11] However, the drama scored low viewership ratings and had to be pre-empted.

In 2012, Yoon starred in the Japanese web drama Brand Guardians, based on a story about a Korean youth who travels to Japan to make it as a fashion stylist. The project was orchestrated by the JAFIC (Japan Apparel-Fashion Industry Council) to increase awareness of Japanese fashion.[12] He then filmed his first Chinese drama Happy Noodles.[13] On December 8, Yoon won the Popular Star Prize in China at the 2012 Asia Top 10 Popular Star Awards by CETV.[14]

In 2013, he starred in the cable series My Cute Guys, the third installment of tvN 's 'flower boy' series. Yoon plays a genius game developer, who accidentally enters the life of a modern Rapunzel (played by Park Shin-hye).[15][16] The series was the highest sold cable drama ever to Japan.[17] Yoon then became a cast member of Barefooted Friends, which was his first variety show.[18] In October, Yoon was cast in KBS's romantic comedy series Prime Minister & I alongside Lee Beom-soo and Girls' Generation's Yoona.[19]

In 2014, Yoon starred opposite Yeo Jin-goo in the film Mr. Perfect, where he plays a professional golfer who loses everything but later becomes a golf coach.[20]

2016–present: Comeback from military service[edit]

After completing military service, Yoon starred in JTBC's historical fantasy drama Mirror of the Witch, playing Joseon's famous doctor Heo Jun. The drama is a fiction story about Heo Jun in his young age and his journey to lift a curse for a princess (played by Kim Sae-ron), whom he later fell in love with.[21] Since May 2016, he became a regular cast member of the third season of popular variety show 2 Days & 1 Night.[22]

The drama premiered in March 2017.[23] The same year, Yoon starred in KBS2's youth drama Hit the Top.[24]

In 2018, Yoon starred in the historical romance melodrama Grand Prince.[25] The series was a ratings success becoming the highest rated TV Chosun drama since the network's establishment in 2011.[26][27] He next starred in the legal drama Your Honor, playing double roles as a judge and convict.[28] In the same year Yoon was cast in the film Private Woman alongside Kim Yoon-hye. Yoon will play the role of a man who has a big scar on his heart and sentimental memories from his relationship with his first love.[29]

In 2019, Yoon is set to star in historical drama Nokdu Flower.[30][31]

Personal life[edit]

Yoon is addicted to books. He has over 3500 books at home.[32]

On April 28, 2014, Yoon secretly enlisted into the Republic of Korea Marine Corps.[33] Yoon had previously expressed his desire to enlist secretly, in order to avoid harming other soldiers.[34] On January 27, 2016, Yoon completed his military service.[35]
